A Statement by Voices for Illinois Children President Tasha Green Cruzat on the flooding in Houston

On behalf of everyone at Voices for Illinois Children, our hearts could not ache any more for those affected by Hurricane Harvey. We stand with the families and children afflicted by these devastating times. Our thoughts and prayers are with each and every individual who has experienced hardship due to the overwhelming devastation. Natural disasters often impair the most vulnerable communities at disproportionate rates; it is unacceptable and communities shouldn’t have to suffer before policies are changed to ensure all communities are protected from tragedies such as this one. However, with the vibrant community that has always existed in Houston, it is no surprise that the community has selflessly come together to support and help one another. It is their strength and unwavering commitment to helping one another that will see them through this. Natural disasters can break communities, but the people of Houston have valiantly bonded together in the face of such daunting, uncontrollable circumstances. Nothing can break the spirit of the communities in Houston, and the perseverance and heroism displayed truly inspires us to fight even harder for those in our own communities.
