Legislature Poised to Vote on Medicaid Plan

Last month, Governor Quinn released a Medicaid “stabilization plan” designed to close a $2.7 billion gap between projected medical assistance program costs and available resources for the Department of Healthcare and Family Services in FY 2013. The plan had three main components: specified program cuts and other cost savings ($1.38 billion), unspecified reductions in provider reimbursement rates ($675 million), and new revenue from a cigarette tax increase coupled with federal Medicaid matching funds ($675 million).
