Responsible Budget Coalition: Proposed Cuts Unnecessary, Reprehensible

In response to the release of Governor Bruce Rauner’s proposed budget, the Responsible Budget Coalition released the statement below. The Responsible Budget Coalition is a group of over one hundred organizations (including Voices) united to preserve vital services for Illinois families and communities and committed to fighting for revenue to invest in valuable resources that put us on a path to sustainable prosperity.

The budget released today by Governor Rauner lays out a series of morally reprehensible, unnecessary budget cuts that compromise the future economic success of Illinois.

Instead of providing a path to sustainable prosperity, the Governor’s budget will have lasting negative impact on our infrastructure and undermine our state’s ability to achieve long-term economic stability.

“Illinois is only as strong as its families and communities,” said John Bouman, President of Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law, a member of the Responsible Budget Coalition. “Communities are more than line items in a spread sheet; they are schools and small businesses, students and senior citizens. You cannot zero families and communities out—they are the glue that hold this state together.”The budget released today by Governor Rauner lays out a series of morally reprehensible, unnecessary budget cuts that compromise the future economic success of Illinois.

“The depth and breadth of the proposed cuts to essential services for our state’s most vulnerable residents are staggering and simply unacceptable,” said Heather O’Donnell, Vice President of Public Policy and Advocacy at Thresholds, another member of the Responsible Budget Coalition. “The Governor and the General Assembly must come together to find a revenue solution to fully fund the public services taxpayers want, need and demand.”

The Responsible Budget Coalition urges lawmakers to reject the Governor’s Budget proposal and stand on the side of Illinois families and communities.
